Getting Around Las Vegas

First of all, before we go any further, we will briefly advise you on how to get around Las Vegas itself.  Walking of course is fine and you will discover much of what Las Vegas has to offer but do bear in mind that the Strip is over 4 miles long and therefore unless you are extremely fit, it can be very tiring.  At a leisurely pace, stopping and starting, 4 miles can take a very long time to cover.  In addition, the hotels themselves are truly huge and do not compare to the average large European or Mediterranean hotel so if you see two hotels apparently adjacent to each other on a map, it may take more than just a few minutes to walk the distance!

The Las Vegas Monorail is a great option for getting around as it runs until the early hours.  You can buy single ride tickets as well as daily and three day passes, more information at www.lvmonorail.com

Buses in Las Vegas are comparatively cheap and also very frequent plus they operate 24 hours.

You can of course also take a hire car which you can collect at the airport on your arrival or arrange collection in resort.  Search and book online here.

Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam

South of Las Vegas on Highway 93 just past Boulder City, Hoover Dam not surprisingly has been compared to the Acropolis in Greece and the Coliseum of Rome. At 726ft above the vicious waters of the Colorado River, it has been branded “the greatest engineering work of its character ever attempted by the hand of man”.  The Hoover Dam was built to harness the energy of this powerful river and provide energy for western states as well as to control the unpredictable nature of the river i.e. flooding in spring, drying up in summer. www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/hoover/introduction

Lake Mead

A year round attraction, Lake Mead National Recreation Area provides a wealth of things to see and do for all the family. Its vast lake caters for swimming and bathing as well as fishing while its desert rewards the more adventurous such as hikers and photographers. It’s also home to 1000’s of desert plants and animals that have long since adapted themselves to survive in these extreme, arid temperatures. http://www.nps.gov/lame/index.htm

Valley of Fire National Park

Valley of Fire National Park

Only 6 miles from Lake Mead (and therefore well worth combining the two!) and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The Valley of Fire is the Nevada regions oldest and largest state park. Its name comes from the red sandstone formations and the absolute beauty of the Mojave Desert. Petrified wood examples can be found all over the park as well as evidence of early man, not to mention 3,000 year-old Indian petro glyph. It’s very popular to come camping, hiking and picnicking here and there are of course unparalleled opportunities for the avid photographer. The park also offers an excellent visitor centre. http://parks.nv.gov/vf.htm

Bonnie Springs

Bonnie Springs

Just how you could imagine the Wild West, it’s as wild as ever and you will find it hard to believe that it’s just 25 miles from Las Vegas centre and reminiscent of a nineteen century mining town. This really is John Wayne country where you will encounter creaking boarded pathways, saloons, tumbleweeds, stagecoaches and even Boot Hill Cemetery!

If you are travelling with kids, Bonnie Springs Old Nevada is perfect as there are lots of attractions for them including a petting zoo, cowboys and cowgirls as well as a miniature train ride (weekends & holidays).  You must see the ‘posse’ show where kids can help find the 'baddy’. With simulated street gunfights, an 1830's melodrama complete with villain in the saloon, and even a public hanging in the street. However, all shows are kid friendly and don’t be surprised if you are asked to participate!

If the cowboys and gunfights are not enough, there's also a wax museum, restaurant, a quaint 1800's style wedding chapel and plenty of western souvenir shopping opportunities. http://www.bonniesprings.com/
